Land Rover Service and Repair in Santa Clarita Valley

R2 Motorsports is Santa Clarita Valley’s independent Land Rover and Range Rover shop. Our Land Rover specialists use factory-grade diagnostic tooling, JLR-spec fluids, and OEM parts to service everything from a Range Rover Classic to a new Defender L663. Owners in Valencia, Saugus, Stevenson Ranch, Newhall, Canyon Country, and Castaic get specialist-level care without the dealership markup or the long scheduling wait.

We work on Land Rovers every week and speak the language that matters: SDD, Pathfinder, EAS, Terrain Response, AJ-V8, Ingenium, ZF 8HP. Land Rover owners from Sylmar, Simi Valley, Northridge, and across Los Angeles County bring their vehicles to R2 because thorough, knowledgeable Land Rover service is genuinely hard to find outside a dealership, and we do it better on price and turnaround.

Whether you need a routine Land Rover oil change, a pre-purchase inspection on a used Range Rover, or full air suspension system work, we have the tooling and the experience to handle it correctly.

Land Rover Models We Service

We work on the full Land Rover lineup, from current production through classic models. Here is a breakdown of what makes each model distinctive from a service standpoint.

  • Range Rover (full size, including SVAutobiography and P530): The flagship of the lineup carries complex air suspension, advanced driver assistance systems, and a mix of powertrains across generations including the supercharged AJ-V8 and the Ingenium six-cylinder. These vehicles reward diligent maintenance and cost significantly more when they don’t get it.

  • Range Rover Sport (including SVR): The Sport shares its platform with the full-size Range Rover but adds sport-tuned suspension and, on SVR, a supercharged V8 that pushes everything harder. Brake, cooling, and transmission service intervals matter more on these cars.

  • Range Rover Velar: A sleeker mid-size option that runs Ingenium four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines. Infotainment and electronic system complexity is high on the Velar, and factory-grade diagnostics are needed to work on it properly.

  • Range Rover Evoque: The compact Evoque is the most frequently daily-driven Land Rover we see. Common maintenance includes Ingenium oil and coolant service, front differential service, and transmission fluid. Don’t skip these because the car feels small.

  • Discovery and Discovery Sport: Practical family SUVs with genuine off-road capability. Discovery service typically involves transfer case fluids, front and rear differential service, Terrain Response calibration checks, and air suspension work on applicable trims.

  • Defender (L663, current generation): The new Defender brought modern architecture to the iconic nameplate. Ingenium powertrains, complex electronic systems, and fuel pump issues on early build years are the primary service concerns. We work on both standard Defender 90 and 110, as well as the V8 and works-spec trims.

  • Classic Defender (pre-2016): These are mechanical, hands-on vehicles that a skilled technician can take apart and rebuild correctly. We handle full service on the classic Defender including Td5 diesel, 300Tdi, and V8 petrol variants.

  • LR2, LR3, and LR4: These are the vehicles where skipped maintenance catches up with owners. The LR3 and LR4 in particular are known for timing chain tensioner issues and air suspension failures that escalate quickly. We keep common parts on the shelf for these.

  • Range Rover Classic: The original. These are collector vehicles now and they deserve careful, informed hands. We service the Classic including engine, transmission, body and chassis work, and older EAS system service.

Land Rover Services We Provide

From oil changes to full air suspension overhauls, here is what we do for Land Rover owners across Santa Clarita Valley.

  • Routine maintenance: Land Rover oil change (full synthetic, correct JLR spec), brake pad and rotor service, fluid flushes including brake, coolant, and power steering, air and cabin filters, spark plugs, battery service, and tire rotation and balancing.

  • Factory-scheduled maintenance intervals: Land Rover’s factory-scheduled maintenance covers a comprehensive set of inspections and fluid replacements at defined intervals. We follow the OEM schedule with JLR-approved fluids and OEM or equivalent parts.

  • AJ-V8 supercharged engine service: The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 found in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport SVR, and Defender V8 requires attention to timing chain tensioners, supercharger nose drive bearing inspection, oil consumption monitoring, and cooling system integrity. We handle full service and repair on this engine family.

  • Ingenium four-cylinder and six-cylinder engine service: Water pump and thermostat housing service on Ingenium engines, oil and coolant service at correct intervals, accessory belt inspection, and AdBlue/DEF system service on diesel Ingenium variants.

  • ZF 8HP transmission service: The ZF 8-speed automatic is found across much of the Land Rover lineup. Fluid and filter service at correct intervals is essential. Many owners are incorrectly told this is a sealed, lifetime-fill unit. It is not. We service it properly.

  • Electronic air suspension (EAS) service: Air spring replacement, compressor service and replacement (Hitachi and AMK units), height sensor calibration, air bag inspection, and full system diagnostics using SDD and Pathfinder tooling. This is the most common major repair category we handle on Range Rovers.

  • Terrain Response system service and calibration: Terrain Response module diagnostics, transfer case calibration, center differential service, and hill descent control verification.

  • Active Differential service (front and rear): Active differential fluid service, clutch pack inspection on applicable models, and electronic differential controller diagnostics.

  • JLR-grade SDD and Pathfinder diagnostics: We use SDD and Pathfinder-equivalent factory-grade scan tools for full system access, fault memory reads, module programming, and live data logging. This is the correct level of diagnostic capability for Land Rover work.

  • Pre-purchase inspection (PPI): Full mechanical and electronic inspection for Land Rover buyers. See the dedicated section below.

  • Brake service including electronic parking brake: Pad and rotor replacement, brake fluid flush, electronic parking brake calibration, and brake caliper service across all Land Rover models.

  • AdBlue and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) service: AdBlue top-off, injector inspection, and SCR system diagnostics on diesel Land Rovers.

Common Land Rover Service Issues We Fix

Land Rovers are genuinely capable, well-engineered vehicles, but they have known recurring issues across generations. Here are the ones we see most often at our shop and what we do about them.

Timing Chain Tensioner Failures on AJ-V8 Engines

The 4.4-liter and early 5.0-liter AJ-V8 engines have a known timing chain tensioner weakness. When tensioners weaken, chains develop slack, which leads to rattle on cold start and eventually timing chain jump. We inspect tensioner condition on every AJ-V8 major service, replace worn tensioners proactively, and perform complete timing chain replacement when needed. Catching this early is a fraction of the cost of the engine work that follows if it is ignored.

Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Leaks on Ingenium Engines

The Ingenium four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines used in current Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Evoque have a recurring pattern of water pump and thermostat housing failures. Coolant loss can be gradual and may not trip a dashboard warning until overheating is already occurring. We inspect the cooling system on every service and address these components when we see early signs of seepage. A leaking water pump on an Ingenium is a scheduled repair, not an emergency, as long as it is caught before it becomes one.

Air Suspension Compressor Failures

The Hitachi and AMK air suspension compressors used across Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models are wear items with a finite service life. A failing compressor shows up as slow ride height adjustment, a corner that droops after sitting overnight, or a compressor that runs constantly and never quite achieves full height. We diagnose compressor health, replace failed units, and inspect the air bags and valve block at the same time since these components fail together on high-mileage vehicles.

Front Differential Pinion Seal Leaks

The front differential pinion seal is a common slow leak point on LR3, LR4, and Range Rover Sport models. Left alone, it eventually coats the front axle area in differential fluid and leads to differential damage. We replace these seals and inspect the front differential fluid level and condition at the same time.

Sunroof Drain Blockages

Clogged sunroof drain tubes are a straightforward issue that leads to significant interior water damage if not addressed. We clear sunroof drains on any vehicle where the customer reports musty smell, wet carpets, or visible water intrusion at the A-pillars or under the dash. This is an easy repair that prevents expensive secondary damage.

Infotainment System Freezes and Module Failures

Range Rover and Velar infotainment systems, particularly the Pivi Pro touchscreen, have a history of software instability, random reboots, and module failures. We diagnose infotainment faults using SDD tooling, apply available software updates, and replace failed modules. We verify the software root cause before recommending hardware replacement.

Defender L663 Fuel Pump Failures

Early production Defender L663 units, particularly 2020 and 2021 model years, saw elevated fuel pump failure rates. Symptoms include no-start, rough running, or a sudden loss of power under load. If you own a first-year L663 that has not had the fuel pump inspected or replaced, this is worth addressing before it strands you.

Supercharger Nose Drive Bearing Wear on AJ-V8

The supercharger nose drive, which connects the supercharger to the drive belt system on the 5.0-liter AJ-V8, uses a bearing assembly that wears over time. The sound is typically a bearing whine at idle that changes with RPM. We inspect and replace the nose drive bearing during applicable AJ-V8 services, often in conjunction with the supercharger belt and tensioner.

Land Rover Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI)

Used Land Rovers and Range Rovers are among the highest-risk used vehicle purchases in any price category. A Range Rover with a failing air suspension, worn AJ-V8 timing chains, or a history of water ingress can look and drive perfectly on a test drive and have five figures of deferred repairs waiting inside it. The complexity of these vehicles makes an independent inspection by someone who knows them essential before any purchase.

Our Land Rover PPI covers the full vehicle: mechanical inspection, electronic system scan using SDD-equivalent factory-grade tools, air suspension assessment including compressor health and air bag condition, transfer case and differential fluid checks, cooling system integrity evaluation, brake and suspension inspection, fluid quality review, and a body panel inspection for evidence of flood, impact, or frame work. On AJ-V8 cars, we check for timing chain rattle patterns and tensioner condition. On Ingenium-powered vehicles, we evaluate cooling system seals and water pump condition.

You receive a written report with photos and a plain-language summary: what we found, what it means, and what it would cost to address at our shop. If the vehicle is solid, we tell you that clearly. If it has significant issues, you will know exactly what they are and whether the asking price reflects them. We do not recommend against clean examples. Schedule your Land Rover pre-purchase inspection before any deposit changes hands.

Why Land Rover Owners in SCV Choose R2 Motorsports

  • Marque-experienced Land Rover specialists: Our technicians work on Land Rovers and Range Rovers every week. They know the generation-specific failure patterns, the correct torque specs, and the repair sequences that matter on these vehicles. This is not a general shop that occasionally sees a Range Rover.

  • Factory-grade diagnostic equipment: We use SDD and Pathfinder-equivalent factory-grade scan tools with full module access, fault memory reads, and live data capability. This is the correct level of diagnostic depth for Land Rover work.

  • OEM and JLR-approved parts and fluids: We use original equipment parts or JLR-approved equivalents and the correct fluid specifications on every service. The wrong fluid in a ZF 8HP or a Land Rover air suspension system causes real damage.

  • Honest independent alternative to the dealer: Land Rover dealerships carry significant overhead, which is reflected in their pricing. As an independent shop, we deliver the same diagnostic capability and parts quality without the markup, and you deal directly with the people working on your car.

  • Transparent pricing before work starts: We quote before we wrench. If we find something during service that was outside the original scope, we call you before doing anything. No surprises on pickup.

  • Fast turnaround and parts stocking: We stock common Land Rover wear parts for same-week turnaround on most jobs. Air suspension compressors, Ingenium cooling components, and ZF 8HP service kits are typically on hand.

  • Proven SCV reputation: R2 Motorsports has a strong review record from Land Rover and Range Rover owners across SCV. Our European auto repair and exotic auto repair clients across the valley recommend us consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the oil in my Range Rover?
Most current Range Rovers and Land Rovers use a 10,000-mile or annual oil change interval with full-synthetic oil at the correct JLR specification. Older AJ-V8 models and vehicles used in towing or off-road duty benefit from shorter intervals. Our Land Rover oil change service uses the correct fluid and filter for your specific model and year every time.

Do I need to go to the Land Rover dealer for warranty work?
No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to use an independent shop for routine maintenance without voiding your factory warranty, as long as the work is documented and correct parts and fluids are used. We maintain proper records and use OEM or JLR-approved parts on every job.

What is the air suspension service life on a Range Rover?
Air bags typically last 80,000 to 120,000 miles depending on road conditions and vehicle load. Compressors wear faster on vehicles that do frequent off-road driving or load hauling. We assess air suspension component condition during every major service and give you a clear picture of where things stand before failures happen.

Can you service the ZF 8HP transmission in my Land Rover?
Yes. The ZF 8-speed is the standard automatic transmission across most of the current Land Rover lineup. Many owners are told it is sealed for life and needs no service. That is incorrect. We perform ZF 8HP fluid and filter service at the correct interval and use the proper ZF-approved fluid specification.

How long does a Land Rover pre-purchase inspection take?
Most Land Rover PPIs are completed within one full business day. We recommend scheduling the inspection before any deposit changes hands. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, that is useful information on its own.

Do you service classic Defenders and Range Rover Classics?
Yes. We work on classic Defenders (pre-2016) and Range Rover Classic models including mechanical and electrical service, engine work, transmission, and chassis repairs. These vehicles deserve careful, knowledgeable hands, and we treat them accordingly.

My Land Rover says it needs AdBlue. What does that mean?
AdBlue, also called diesel exhaust fluid, is consumed by the selective catalytic reduction system on diesel Land Rover models. The vehicle needs a top-off of this fluid at regular intervals, typically every oil change or more frequently under heavy use. Running out of AdBlue will eventually cause the vehicle to refuse to start. We handle AdBlue service on all applicable Land Rover models.

Do you do Land Rover alignments?
Yes. Land Rover alignment requires manufacturer-specific settings and accounts for the air suspension ride height. We perform four-wheel alignments on all Land Rover and Range Rover models using equipment calibrated to JLR specifications.
